Social Media Leasing Scam

7th September 2018 | Mike Lamb

Fraudsters haver resorted to advertising fake vehicle leasing deals on Social Media according to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).

Deals are appearing on paid advertising across multiple social media channels (including popular sites such as Instagram) where fraudsters are posing as certified BVRLA members, they are luring customers in with enticing headlines and specifically targeting those with poor or blemished credit ratings.
The advice which is being passed on is to be vigilant and think twice before responding to adverts where a less conventional means of communication is used to start the process, such as a Direct Message on Social Media or Text Messaging. In addition, the BVRLA are advising to be extra cautious with regards to deals promoting: 'No Credit Checks', 'No Deposit' and similar eye-catching promises.

Cyber Crime

The Chief Executive of the BVRLA, Gerry Keaney advised: "These criminals are purposely targeting the vulnerable, scamming money from people who can least afford to lose it. it's deplorable. Their adverts can appear very convincing with some even posing as BVRLA members and citing membership numbers of legitimate members."

The main message to take away though, is that legitimate Leasing Brokers and BVRLA members, adhere to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules and guidelines. As part of this, they will carry out credit and affordability checks as part of the process (these may also be completed by the Leasing Funders - not the Broker directly). Those brokers who don't credit check or assess scales of affordability won't be legitimate traders and most likely are out to scam you.

This is an increasingly serious problem which has now been taken on by Action Fraud, the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre. If you have already fell victim to this kind of fraud, don't hesitate to call them on 0300 123 2040 to report it.

If you're hesitant about dealing with a broker and would like to check their BVRLA status, you can contact the BVRLA to check directly by email to Adam Holt: adam@bvrla.co.uk
